Small Cork Board Decorating Ideas

Cork boards are one way to showcase photos, organize ideas and highlight favorite mementos. They are also a good place to leave notes for friends and family due to the ease in which you can change the posted items. Cork boards may be used for many functions in decorating dorm rooms, children’s rooms, offices and kitchens.

Dorm Room Ideas

A small cork board is an ideal place for college roommates to leave each other messages. To give the cork board some style, select a piece of fabric to cover the board. Spray adhesive on the board and smooth the fabric into place. Turn the fabric edges under the back of the cork board and staple them. Using card stock, write or type messages such as “At Class,” “Out with Friends,” or “At the Library.” Using pins, attach these messages in a vertical row along the left side of the cork board. Place photos of each roommate to the right of the messages. Buy foam letters to spell each roommate’s name, such as “Maria is” or “Laura is.” Using a hot glue gun, glue the letters above each photo. Hang the board near the door, and whenever leaving the dorm, select the appropriate message to place below your photo.

    Children’s Room Ideas

A small cork board can be used to decorate the outside of a child’s bedroom door. Select the fabric to cover the cork board. Ensure the child is involved in decorating the board. It is not only an enjoyable project for the child but also allows her to incorporate her style. Take pictures of the child doing things such as studying, playing with friends, sleeping and listening to music. Using pins, place these photos in a vertical row along the left side of the cork board. Use foam letters to spell the child’s name, such as “Becky is.” Use ribbon to make a “picture frame” rectangle approximately one inch larger than the photos. Glue the ribbon to the board, and place the foam letters above the frame. Whenever, the child is in her room, she can indicate what she is doing by placing the appropriate photo in the ribbon frame. It will indicate, for example, “Becky is playing with friends.”

    Kitchen Ideas

If you cut out recipes only to misplace them or are constantly lose your shopping list, a cork board is an ideal way to organize your kitchen. Create a decorative cork board by making a border to match the theme of your kitchen. For example, if you have a beach cottage, use shells as a border. If you have a country kitchen, use small branches. For a Mediterranean look, use dried peppers or chilies. Attach these accessories to the board using a hot glue gun. Keep plenty of pins on hand to attach your recipes, shopping and “To Do” lists.
